Public Transport in Rome: How to Get Around Easily

Tap&Go - Pay with your credit card

  • Validity: 100 minutes from the first tap.
  • Use: Tap your contactless card/phone/watch every time you board a new vehicle, including bus changes.
  • Metro rule: Valid for only one metro journey; unlimited bus/tram changes within 100 minutes.
  • Price: €1.50 per trip, with automatic daily capping.
  • Daily cap: After the fifth trip, you pay no more than €7.00 total for that day.
  • Checks: In case of inspection, you must show the card or device you used to tap.
  • Important: Always use the same card or device for all taps on the same day.

Tickets and Passes

  • BIT – 100-Minute Ticket
    Valid for 100 minutes from validation. You can change buses, trams and metro lines, but you can enter the metro only once per ticket.
  • Day Pass (24-Hour Ticket)
    Valid for 24 hours from first validation on all metro lines, buses, trams and urban trains within Rome. Good if you plan to take several rides in one day.
  • 48-Hour and 72-Hour Tickets
    Work like the day pass but for 48 or 72 hours from first validation. Ideal for short stays with frequent use of public transport.
  • Weekly Pass (CIS – 7 Days)
    Valid for 7 consecutive days on metro, buses, trams and urban trains within Rome. Convenient if you stay a week and move around a lot.
  • Roma Pass (Tourist Card)
    Includes unlimited public transport within Rome for 48 or 72 hours, plus free or discounted entry to selected museums and attractions. Useful if you plan to visit several sights.

Getting from Termini Train Station to the City

  • Metro: Lines A (orange),Direction Battistini, and B (blue) Direction Laurentina for the Colosseum, are on level -1 of the station.
  • Bus: Route 64 connects Termini directly with Via Nazionale, Piazza Venezia, and the Vatican.
  • Taxi: A ride to the central areas usually costs between €8 and €15.

Getting from the Airport to the City Centre

Fiumicino

  • Leonardo Express (Train): Fastest option, direct to Roma Termini, costs about €14–15.
  • Regional Train FL1: Cheaper option, stops at major stations in Rome (except Termini).
  • Operating hours: Trains run approximately from 7:00 to 23:30.
  • Bus/Shuttle: Several companies (e.g. SIT, Terravision) connect the airport with Termini or the Vatican at budget-friendly prices.
  • Taxi: Fixed fare of €50 to destinations within the Aurelian Walls; travel time depends on traffic.

Ciampino

  • Direct Shuttle Buses (Terravision, SIT, RomeAirportBus): Go straight from Ciampino Airport to Roma Termini (Via Marsala/Via Giolitti) in about 40–50 minutes. Frequent service, usually from around 08:15 to 00:15, with variable but budget-friendly prices.
  • Regional Train: No direct train from the airport. First take a shuttle bus (Cotral/Schiaffini) to Ciampino railway station (about 5–10 minutes), then a regional train to Roma Termini.
  • Taxi: Fixed-price fares are usually available for the city centre, but it is best to confirm the price with the driver before getting in.
  • Bus Stop Location: The bus stop is just outside the arrivals area, at Piazzale Leonardo da Vinci, Rome Ciampino Airport.
